Barbara Frances Backman’s career reflects a progression through the systems designed to protect vulnerable children, moving from medicine to social services and ultimately into criminal investigation.

She began her professional life as a nurse, developing an early understanding of how physical evidence can tell a story when words cannot. That foundation led her into child protection work as an emergency response social worker, where she received extensive training in the recognition of non-accidental trauma. Over time, she completed more than 1,200 hours of specialized training and was later qualified as an expert witness in California courts.

Her work eventually expanded into criminal investigation, working alongside law enforcement and prosecutors as part of multidisciplinary teams responsible for investigating complex child abuse cases. In that role, she operated at the intersection of medicine, investigation, and legal process, where initial reports evolve into cases and decisions carry lasting consequences.

Throughout her career, Backman was involved in cases that revealed not only individual acts of abuse but also the broader systems in which those cases exist. She observed how investigations often unfold slowly, shaped by incomplete information, institutional limitations, and the difficult realities of proving what has occurred.

Those experiences became the foundation for her debut novel, The Tarnished Tender. While the story is fictionalized, it is informed by real cases, the patterns, challenges, and complexities she encountered over years of investigative work. The novel reflects a world where truth is not always easily uncovered, and where the pursuit of justice can carry both professional and personal cost.

Backman writes with a focus on realism and restraint, drawing readers into stories that examine the intersection of vulnerability, power, and accountability. Her work is grounded in experience, shaped through fiction to explore the deeper questions that arise when systems are tested, and truths are difficult to bring to light.

A portion of the proceeds from The Tarnished Tender will be donated to a national non-profit working to combat human trafficking and child abuse.
