Barbara Frances Backman
Barbara Frances Backman is a crime thriller author whose work is shaped by years spent on the front lines of child protection and criminal investigation. She began her career as a nurse and later worked as an emergency response social worker, where she received extensive training in the recognition of non-accidental trauma, before becoming a sworn criminal investigator working alongside law enforcement and prosecutors.
With more than 1,200 hours of specialized training and qualification as an expert witness in California courts, her work placed her at the intersection of medicine, investigation, and prosecution, where reports become cases and decisions carry lasting consequences.
Her debut novel, The Tarnished Tender, draws from those experiences, exploring the hidden intersections of child abuse, institutional failure, and trafficking. The story reflects a world where innocence is fragile, power often hides in plain sight, and the truth does not easily surface.
Backman writes with a focus on the realities behind the investigation, offering a perspective shaped by experience and a commitment to telling stories that examine both the systems in place and the cost of confronting them.

Writing The Tarnished Tender became a way to explore the realities of these investigations through fiction, while preserving the depth, complexity, and lasting impact they carry. It also became a way to give voice to the children whose stories were never fully heard, and to those I will never forget.
